SPASM
Maja Smrekar

SPASM – a digital performance – functions as an ongoing research project for a film of the same title. Produced by A/POLITICAL (UK), it is part of Maja Smrekar’s evolving practice, exploring the entanglements of technology, memory, and care through a posthuman lens. Drawing on personal and collective histories, it examines how intimacy, loss, and transformation unfold across technological systems, and temporal boundaries. This work-in-progress envisions new forms of kinship, xeno-solidarity, and alliances, reflecting worlds shaped by digital legacies, ecological collapse, and the reconfiguration of relationships between humans and technology as two interdependent entities. It thus invites audiences to reflect on care, resilience, and ethical responsibility in the face of environmental and technological uncertainty.

Maja Smrekar (1978, Slovenia) is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher whose work explores technology, memory, and posthumanism. Combining art, science, and technology, she investigates ecofeminism, interspecies relationships, AI, and biotechnology through performance, installation, video, sculpture, and hybrid media. Her work has been shown internationally at institutions including MAXXI Rome, ZKM Karlsruhe, Kunsthalle Wien, BOZAR Brussels, and Ars Electronica Linz, and in festivals such as Transmediale and Cynetart. Recipient of awards including the Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica, Prešeren Foundation Award, and Follow Fluxus, she teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, University of Ljubljana, and collaborates with leading academic, scientific, and art institutions across the world.
