Coexistence Disrupted adopts a more-than-human perspective, exploring interactions between the living world and the human-built environment. Other species that coexist with us may be small and invisible, yet they are woven into the fabric of every city. The built environment dominating contemporary cities – glass, steel, synthetic materials, asphalt, and concrete – is often aggressive and exclusionary toward other organisms, disrupting coexistence. Because the natural world is adaptable and resilient, the presence of other species in urban environments often appears as disruption.
For this year’s IZIS festival, students developed research projects exploring disruptions to coexistence and strategies for mitigating them. Students devoted extensive time to research, focusing on different areas of Koper, where they observed processes of decay, water and air pollution, noise, and heat. They carefully studied the organisms, plants, and animals inhabiting these spaces, along with the processes they set in motion. Mold or moss on a damp façade, mussels on pier walls, moss growing between paving stones, and the murmur of the sea all became sources of inquiry and inspiration for new student works. The students created interventions in the form of objects and installations, using new materials as a way of mitigating these disruptions and imagining a more hospitable city for both humans and other species.
