SEDIMENT LAB
Hypercomf
Sediment Lab explores the material and ecological realities of marine sediment extracted from the Port of Koper. This byproduct of dredging, usually treated as waste, is reimagined as both a valuable natural resource and a lens on the relationship between human activity and marine ecosystems. The project takes inspiration from benthic organisms that shape sediment through burrows and nests, forms that become metaphors for human habitation. In collaboration with Luka Port of Koper and the National Institute of Biology Piran Marine Station and through workshops with local residents, sediment was transformed into interior use tiles and paints. Inside the container, the work unfolds as a laboratory and archive and at the far end the Sediment Lab video reflects on overgrowth and the fragile lives beneath the port. A table invites visitors to mix and create their own sediment paint using the prepared sediment base and experimenting with natural earth pigments.

Hypercomf is a multidisciplinary, speculative design identity, established in 2017 and based on Tinos island.
Hypercomf’s practice fosters interdisciplinary collaborations and community engagement methods of production, often including a range of biodiverse participants. These processes are manifested as space activations, multimedia artworks, and sustainable design prototypes, structured around dynamic narratives that feature both organic and inorganic protagonists.
The future of the relationships between nature and culture, between domestication and ecosystemic networks, tradition and technology, as well as the challenges faced by small island communities, are some of the research subjects that are set in focus.
